Looking for *reliable* Drupal Themer (Anywhere, baby!)

Date: 2011-04-06, 8:32PM PDT

E-Mail to: job-dzew3-2310121428@craigslist.org

Hello! I am a freelance developer, and I am looking for a freelance Drupal themer to help me with some overflow work. This is a part time position with no guaranteed hours. I will try and keep you busy if you keep being reliable – no joke!

Me:

- I’m a developer with a background in cognitive science – I love ideas! the web is full of them, and that is why I love it

- USABILITY <3

- I believe that the people that work for me are my most valuable investment. I don’t mind taking the time to teach (and pay you for this), or help, if it means that you will put in good effort and you will complete quality work for me

- Can afford someone who is $20-$25 an hour depending on experience

- Good with clients, and good at closing sales – if you are responsible and reliable and can be trusted to get the job done – I will literally try and feed you more and more work. Show me you can handle it, and I will try and help you build your business and portfolio

Why should you work with me? I understand what it is like to do your job, I know how challenging it can be – so I am much easier to work with than ‘the end client’ who may not understand what it is that you do. I know that this stuff is non-trivial, and that there is a learning curve – god damn, to be a TRULY proficient web developer (or designer, depending on your job description) you need to know several languages even to just get started on a project most of the time. I will always try and treat you well. I understand that learning new technology can take time, I know that rarely can a good Drupal theme be cranked out in less than 12-15 hours (even the most simple), and I have what I believe, compared to some of my past clients, to be pretty rational expectations on my projects. I will try and be one of those clients who makes up for the annoying crappy ones. I’ve had those clients and I never want to be them. :*(

You should:

- Know how to set up Drupal, install modules, and your way around basic configuration. If I said “Set up a Drupal install with ‘x’ modules’ you would feel confident in this task

- Understand PHPTemplate and not afraid to use a little PHP-fu to get down and dirty and access Drupal’s node fields directly – not afraid of printf/var_dump and manually building templates when need be – I’m taking care of the main dev, but if you know basic theme functions then I will sleep easier at night – if not, I can help you learn how to be a better themer :)

- Know CSS/HTML like a BOSS

- Can build and theme basic Views

- Either know some of the perks of HTML5/CSS3 or are getting on that bandwagon ASAP

- Should know how to slice up a PSD into a pixel-perfect theme (okay, taming wily forms is hard – I’ll give you that)

Absolutely crucial that you possess these qualities:

- Not afraid to ask questions (Even if you feel like you’re missing something ‘obvious’ – I will never judge you for wanting to be extra clear and do a good job. I encourage it!)

- Not afraid to give accurate and reliable status updates (even when behind schedule!)

- Not afraid to tell me when you think we could improve our work flow, or do something better – either for standards of quality or efficiency – if we work together, we can improve our business together

- Please have been freelancing enough to know how to estimate your time. It’s a dead giveaway to me how green talent can be when I ask how long a project will take and get a confident ‘four hours’ as a reply knowing full well to double that in case of hiccups. ;)

- YOU LIKE WHAT YOU DO and have a sense of humour about it!

SUPER EXTRA DELUXE BONUS POINTS FOR WHICH I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER:

- You’ve done some Drupal 7 setup or theming (any at all helps!)

- You’ve worked with WordPress (because sometimes I get WordPress jobs I can pass along)

- Any JavaScript experience at all, and jQuery counts – so does successfully implementing and troubleshooting common types of plugins like galleries, slide-shows, carousels, and so forth

Please be able to follow explicit instructions. To impress me early, start by following these ones:

1. Please give me your top five favourite portfolio pieces. Tell me a bit about why you like them and what you did to create them. They should be Drupal sites.

2. Show me a piece of code that you are most proud of. You don’t have to impress me with anything spectacular and it can be from one of the five example sites, but do tell me why you’re pleased with your code cnippet.

3. What do you code for fun?

4. What’s your favourite blog to read to stay up to date in the industry?

5.What are the kind of bad habits you have on a project? Be honest. Do you ever procrastinate particular tasks you don’t like? If so, what are those? Do you sometimes lose momentum/interest? Do you forget to comment your code? Just be honest at the outset, we’re all human. I’ll tell you mine too, don’t worry.

6. Follow that up with some of your more awesome points?

7. What sorts of qualities do you look for in a client? What makes a ‘good client’ to you?

If you do not follow these instructions, you will not receive a reply. Sending references early is a bonus because if I vet you, you can bet I will ask for them eventually.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post. I hope that you have some fun with the application if you do.

Cheers!
